The Game

Fruit Pie Frenzy came about because Griddler was in soft launch and some friends had seen that I was capable of taking a game from concept to launch, which most people they'd worked with on part time projects had given up part way through. Due to this we discussed some popular games ideas that were out at that time and if we could create one in a short period of time with the 3 of us.

One of the members was an excellent coder, so I was able to take a step back from the code and focus on the design, UX, branding and marketing side of things instead of setting up complex core gameplay and flows. We worked on the game for a number of months and soon had something ready to launch.

The aim of Fruit Pie Frenzy is to complete full pies and remove them from the board, with economy of space being the driving factor in clearing the board. Completing a pie of multiple different colours (cherry, kiwi and lemon) would result in earning 10 points and removing it from the board, freeing up an entire space for more pie slices (1/8th of a pie). Creating a pie of all the same colour would also remove it from the board, but it would will 1/6 segments of the pie order in the middle and reward 20 points. Filling the pie order in the middle of the board would allow the player to tap it and "send the order" at any point, where they would clear the entire board and start again on a higher score multiplier, aiming for a high score by playing longer.

My Work

As well as the roles mentioned above, I was somewhat of a Producer, telling the other 2 how things should work, providing examples and reviewing the work as it was created. There was no set time to complete this all in but the main aim, as always, was quality.

Once the game was live I was still really focused on Griddler, which had recently been featured by Apple and took up more of my time, so Fruit Pie Didn't get the love it deserved to start with. Once things on Griddler became less hectic I was able to go back to Fruit Pie Frenzy and do an update with the help of my friends, adding an Expert game mode, some localisation, and an entirely new method of entering games. Instead of playing a game for free we were now using Tokens, where the player has a set amount and must watch ads or purchase iAPs in order to play more games. More than anything this was another test of how to monetise a game in the most player friendly way.

All in all Fruit pie Frenzy has seen moderate success and has a lot of potential for more updates in the future.
